Most of the Village of Ridgewood was built out between the late 1800s and the 1930s, when the railroad made it a commuter town. The result is street after street of large Tudors, center-hall colonials, Victorians and Dutch colonials, set on generous lots under oaks and maples that now stand well above the rooflines. It is about sixteen miles north of our office in the City of Orange.

What that means for the roof

• Tudors are all angles. Steep front gables, a big chimney on the front wall, and several roof planes meeting in valleys. The chimney and the valleys are where Tudor roofs usually leak.
• Size. A large colonial or Victorian has a lot of roof. A replacement takes careful planning so the house is never left open to the weather.
• Shade and debris. Tree cover keeps roofs damp, grows moss on the north side, and fills gutters and valleys with leaves. Clogged valleys back water under shingles.
• Ice at the eaves. Big old houses often have little attic insulation or ventilation, so ice dams form along the gutters in a snowy winter.
