A different kind of roof
Most of Hudson County's housing is dense: attached row houses, two- and three-family frame houses, and small apartment buildings set close together along the Palisades and down to the waterfront. A lot of those buildings have flat or low-slope roofs behind a parapet wall rather than a pitched shingle roof, and working on them is a different job from roofing a suburban colonial.

- Parapet and wall flashing. Where a flat roof meets a parapet or the wall of the building next door, the flashing is the first thing to leak. It is also the detail most often patched badly.
- Drainage to scuppers, gutters or internal drains, because standing water on a flat roof shortens its life and eventually finds a way in.
- Exposure. Buildings up on the Palisades take more wind than sheltered suburban streets, which is hard on loose edges and old flashing.

Often, if the leak is at a seam, the parapet or a drain and the rest of the roof is sound. If water has soaked into the layers underneath, it needs replacing.
