Siding that changes the whole house
New siding, trim, soffits and fascia, planned with the roof and gutters so the whole outside of the house works together.
More than a new color
Siding is the part of the house everyone sees, and new siding changes a house more than almost any other single project. But it is also the wall's rain jacket. Underneath the panels is the house wrap that sheds any water that gets behind them, and around every window and door is flashing that decides whether water stays outside. A good siding job is mostly about those parts, done right, with the new color on top.
RJ Construction installs siding across North Jersey and uses CertainTeed siding products. Customers have hired us for siding on its own and together with a new roof and windows, and one reviewer summed it up: they did what they said they would do, when they said they would do it.
How we replace siding
- Old siding off, wall checked. We look at the sheathing for rot and soft spots, especially under windows and at the bottom of walls.
- House wrap and flashing. A weather-resistant barrier over the sheathing and proper flashing around every window and door.
- Trim, soffits and fascia. The corners, window surrounds, soffits and fascia are part of the job, not an afterthought. Soffits are also half of the roof's ventilation.
- Panels hung to expand. Vinyl moves with temperature, so it is nailed loosely enough to slide. Siding nailed tight buckles on the first hot afternoon.
- Cleanup of the yard and beds before we leave.
Styles we install
Vinyl lap siding is the classic horizontal look on most North Jersey colonials, capes and split-levels, and the most affordable way to reside a whole house.
Board and batten siding runs vertically, with narrow battens covering the seams. It gives a farmhouse or modern look on its own, or an accent on gables and entries above lap siding.
Siding and the roof together
If the roof is also near the end of its life, doing both together means the flashing where the roof meets the walls is done once, by one crew, and tied properly into both. It also means one dumpster and one round of disruption. Ask us to quote a roof replacement alongside the siding, and consider new gutters at the same time, since they hang on the fascia.
Common questions
How long does it take to replace the siding on a house?
It depends on the size of the house, the number of windows and doors, and how much trim work is involved. A typical house takes several days rather than one. We give you a schedule with the quote.
Can new siding go over old siding?
We prefer to remove the old siding so the wall underneath can be checked and wrapped properly. Covering it hides any rot and can trap moisture.
How do I choose a siding color?
Look at the roof color first, since the two have to work together, then the trim and shutters. Samples look different on a sunny wall than in your hand, so hold them up against the house.
How much does new siding cost?
The size of the house, the style of siding, and the amount of trim, soffit and window work set the price. See our cost guide.
