What standing seam means
A standing seam roof is made of long metal panels that run from the eave to the ridge, joined along raised seams that stand up above the flat of the panel. The fasteners sit under those seams rather than through the face of the panel, so there are no exposed screws to back out or leak over time. That concealed-fastener design is the difference between a standing seam roof and the cheaper screw-down metal panels you see on barns and sheds.

Common questions
Is a standing seam metal roof worth it in New Jersey?
If you plan to stay in the house for a long time, often yes: it lasts far longer than shingles, sheds snow well and needs little upkeep. If you may sell in a few years, a new shingle roof usually makes more financial sense.
Is a metal roof noisy in the rain?
Over a finished attic or a room with little insulation above it, rain is more audible than on shingles. Over a typical insulated attic most people notice little difference.
Can metal go on a low-pitch roof?
Standing seam can handle lower slopes than shingles can, which is why it is often used on porch roofs and additions. Very flat roofs need a membrane instead.
